Mi Woods is a place full with micro patterns, handmade paper cut illustrations as reflections of nature and new stories within.
Creative process
The best way to show uniqueness of nature i found ancient Japanese method of painting on water, called Suminagashi (it means floating ink). It has organic, delicate look and meditative process. I take this craft from the past as an inspiration and experiment with it, trying out new techniques and different paints. I push it in a new direction, into something exiting and unpredictable. Here, process is more interesting than a result: it is kind of meditation, water and colour therapy, when the creator do not control everything, but takes a moment to watch and leave it for its natural flow. After a while, this colour dance on water is captured by placing a paper on top. The result is one of a kind. To get more bold colours and different contrast textures, acrylic painting or block printing also comes in handy.
The second medium I have chosen is collage. What fascinates me about this stage is that there is also no sketch. I’m putting, replacing pieces of paper into a collage and I don’t even suspect how the story of the plant will come together in the end. Although I am still learning to live in this moment in my everyday life, but when I am creating, I can´t do it in any other way.
By cutting, combining, matching and bonding decorative paper pieces, grows a final result - a combination of natural process and handwork - nature objects, full of textural micro ornaments, which recall leaf veins, ground surface, flower pollen or tree bark...
Behind Mi Woods it is me - Milda Ignatavičius - graphic designer from Kaunas (Lithuania). Besides digital graphic design, I have always had a passion for different crafts, analog techniques and illustration. So since 2018 I have started to grow Mi Woods. For me this is a place where i feel home and where I find here and now moments. At the same time i am happy with my original plant stories to bring cosiness and nature feeling to others home.
